  • Handpoke is the process of depositing the ink in the skin with a needle that’s being held in the tattoo artist’s hand. It’s a traditional form of tattooing, and this method is the origin of tattoo art.

Tattooing with a machine is the same process, but the needle deposits the ink in the skin by being pushed very rapidly by a motor.
Handpoke is generally less painful and offers an easier healing process, since the trauma exerted on the skin is significantly reduced compared to machine tattooing.

It is however a longer process since every dot of ink is deposited manually, and it has restrictions at the design level; big pieces, a lot of shading or color packing can be challenging.

Handpoke is better suited for organic-looking tattoos, simpler liners, small text, dotwork, etc. To see some examples of designs that are better suited for handpoke tattooing, take a look at my tattoo flash or the pieces I have done.

  • Not currently, or at least not officially since I am still practicing this method.

If you’re interested in letting me practice this skill on your skin at a discounted rate, please take a look at my promotions’ page.

  • For handpoked tattoos, I don’t charge by the hour, since it takes longer to do than a machine tattoo, and I believe the client shouldn’t be penalized for this. I usually start at 100$ and then adjust the price in function of the size, placement and the design of your tattoo.

Tattoos from my flash designs are usually less expensive than custom designs, as you’re not paying for the design part.

  • I always suggest clients wear something comfortable from the get-go. You can also bring a small blanket or a pillow if the tattoo is in a tricky spot and you know you’ll be laying down. A water bottle and a snack are primordial, especially for longer sessions. Some people also like to bring a portable game station (like a Nintendo Switch) or a book to keep them entertained, which I totally encourage!

  • Yes, it’s an often-neglected step in the tattooing process, but there are best practices to follow to prepare for your tattoo appointment.

I’ve made a detailed post of what to do/not to do before your tattoo session in order to make the tattooing itself easier as well as the healing phase, so your tattoo can look the best it possibly can!

  • After the session, I give out cards with the suggested aftercare regimen. For more informations, check out this detailed article!
